Agathangelou (16) will be a member of the under-17 squad for the Danish event, which is being held in Copenhagen, but her dedication and recent improvement mean that she has also been selected to play at the under-19 level in the World Championships in Canada.

Her father, John, said that a month ago there was little chance of her being selected, but that her game had improved dramatically.

‘She is delighted to be going,’ he said, ‘even though she will miss half-term and will not see all her friends in Jersey.’ The championships are held every two years, last for ten days and are considered to be the junior equivalent of the Olympics.

In Copenhagen Agathangelou will partner Michelle Cheung, who is the reigning European singles champion, in the doubles and Rajiv Ouseph, who is seeded fifth in the England senior squad, in the mixed doubles.

Meanwhile, after settling in at her new boarding school in Bath, Agathangelou took part at the weekend in her second Junior Challenge Select under-19 tournament at Wimbledon.

She was carrying a back injury, but nevertheless played convincingly.

Unfortunately, she and her doubles partner, Vicki Ingram, lost 15-13, 15-17, 15-10 to the number-one Scots pairing.

With partner Adam Francis in the mixed doubles, she also lost to more experienced players.

In the singles she fought her way to the quarter-finals, eventually losing to top under-19 player Helen Ward, although she held her own until the final set, when Ward had to go off court to receive medical treatment.

The five-minute break seemed to unsettle the Jersey girl, who finally lost 11-9, 10-13, 11-6.
