Fossey gained a creditable second place and an impressive 21st overall, but with the class winner not registered for the series, Fossey tops the leaderboard after the Melvyn Evans Motorsport Tour of Epynt in Wales.

After claiming the 1400 championship in the BTRDA gravel series last year, 19-year-old Fossey made the switch to the MSA Asphalt Championship, to further his knowledge on the sealed-surface ahead of a future Prestone MSA British Rally Championship assault.

As well as a new championship, Fossey drove the exciting Peugeot 208 R2 for the very first time.

Fossey and co-driver Chris Sharpe-Simkiss lined up in the resplendent Yokohama-backed Peugeot 208 at car 67, on the damp Welsh roads.

Getting off to a confident start, the Channel Islander mixed it with the established runners right from the outset to leapfrog his way up the order throughout the seven-stage event.

By the lunchtime halt, Fossey was in the top 30 and he continued to put many experienced drivers in more powerful cars behind him as he placed 21st overall and second in class.

Fossey said: ‘I was really happy with my first proper run in the car.

‘I managed to grow in confidence with every mile and getting used to left-hand drive and more power took its time, but with the stages dry in the morning that
really helped speed-up the learning process.

‘The 208 is a mega car! Peugeot have really put a lot of effort and development into it and much like the Yaris, it’s a car that is urging you to drive faster, which is really reassuring when pushing the limits of the car.

‘To come away from Wales with the confidence so high is a great way to start the year.

‘Epynt is a real one-of-a-kind place. It took me a couple of stages to get into a rhythm and a comfortable feeling, as you have to really commit over the blind, fast crests and sweeping corners.

‘Once you have a strong feel for the terrain it is an incredible place.’

The next round of the championship is in the Isle of Man on 11 and 12 May.
