Renault’s new Scenic is now available with a hybrid powertrain.

Priced from £25,055, the dCi 110 Hybrid Assist uses a 10kW electric motor powered by a 48-volt battery linked to the car’s standard 110 engine. Renault claims that it’ll return 80.7mpg – a 10 per cent improvement over the standard engine – and emit just 94g/km CO2.

The battery is located behind the second row of seats in the standard Scenic, or in the spare wheel housing in the larger Grand Scenic. The electrified powertrain benefits from increased torque – up to 70Nm extra in certain situations – and this gives the Scenic better in-gear pick-up, ideal for urban driving. When decelerating, the car’s Motor Generation Unit recovers energy and stores this in the battery.

Though the Scenic Hybrid does come with a £1,000 premium over the equivalent petrol or diesel version, its low emissions do mean that it qualifies for a discounted rate of vehicle tax – just £110 during the first year.

Renault’s Active Emergency Braking System with pedestrian detection comes as standard, as do 20-inch alloy wheels and an 8.7-inch colour touchscreen.
