MOVES towards a possible law change to reduce the impact of fireworks on animals will not be possible during the current political term, the Home Affairs Minister has confirmed.

Responding to a question from Deputy Max Andrews in the States Assembly, the minister – Deputy Mary Le Hegarat – said there were a series of priority pieces of legislation that her department was working to complete prior to the election next June.

The items cited by Deputy Le Hegarat were legislation around violence against women and girls, child detention, the framework for police complaints, modifications for tall buildings in the wake of the Grenfell fire and post-custodial supervision arrangements.

“Even though I would like to have been able to do something more in relation to this, it has not been possible,” she said.

The minister did say that she would talk to the Constable Committee over the coming months in order to consider how potential changes to the Explosives Law might be progressed during the next political term.

“It’s a complex situation, and it’s necessary to consider the number of displays [at other times of year] that take place beyond 5 November,” she said.
