Sugar tax and alcohol sales on Health’s agenda

A report published last week by the Public Health Statistics Unit, showed that on average 250 Islanders die every year before their 75th birthday.

The figures, as reported in the Premature Mortality 2013-2015 report, show that the main causes of premature death in Jersey are cancer of the digestive organs, lung cancer, heart disease, lung disease and liver disease.

Jill Birbeck, head of the Health Department’s Health Intelligence unit, said that the department was drafting a number of strategies focusing on food and nutrition to try to reduce the number of Islanders dying before the age of 75.
