A ST Peter store is set to almost double in size after the approval of a planning application.
The branch of Marks and Spencer currently occupies a section of a larger building but had applied for more space inside by taking over the premises from C&M Scaffolding.
Under the terms of the planning application, the shop now has three years to build the expansion.
The proposals include a Percentage for Art contribution, with the Planning Department ruling that M&S would not be allowed to use the expanded site until it has been installed.
While the application was open, the Channel Islands Co-op wrote to the Planning Department to contest it, arguing that it was a far greater “intensification of retail floorspace and trading capacity in the local area of St Peter” than developers were letting on.
It said that out-of-town shopping would risk reinforcing shoppers’ car dependency and that it risked undermining local businesses.
The Planning Department dismissed these concerns.
