Eye surgeon to sue States over contract cancellation

Dr Amar Alwitry has also called on politicians to support a vote of no confidence in the States Employment Board, urging Members to ‘stand up for justice, for honour and for integrity’.

Yesterday, the surgeon – a former Victoria College pupil – confirmed that he will take the case to the Royal Court as he claims attempts to settle out of court have ended in a stalemate.

He is seeking compensation and a ruling that doctors who raise safety concerns will not be treated in a similar manner.

Dr Alwitry’s decision comes as the SEB, which is chaired by Chief Minister Ian Gorst and also consists of Treasury Minister Alan Maclean, Health Minister Andrew Green and Constables Michel Le Troquer and Juliette Gallichan, face a vote of no confidence in the States this week.

Meanwhile, the States Complaints Board said in a recent report that the termination of Dr Alwitry’s contract was ‘one of the worst examples’ of a public authority ‘disregarding’ contract law.

However, the SEB has maintained that the decision was correct, despite admitting procedural flaws.
