Durrell expert in India for milestone on pigmy hogs

Daniel Craven, the organisation’s education officer, is heading to the Assam region to document and assist with the release of the 100th pygmy hog, which is a critically endangered species.

The creatures, which stand about 30 cm high, were thought to be extinct in the 1960s but were rediscovered by Islander John Tessier Yandell in 1971 and although attempts to breed the animals failed initially, a successful programme has been run since 1995, with support from the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.

With just six hogs caught in the wild 20 years ago, the project is now ready to release the 100th animal, and Mr Craven is due to help with the process.

Anyone who would like to donate can contact Mr Craven via ‘Pygmy Hog Conservation’ Facebook page, or by emailing daniel.craven@durrell.org.
