Flight row sparks urgent review of States travel

A union representing public-sector workers and Treasury Minister Alan Maclean have called on Economic Development chief executive Mike King and Locate Jersey director of inward investment Wayne Gallichan to apologise to Islanders for their actions, which they describe as unacceptable at a time when the States is slashing spending and making staff redundant, and Senator Maclean also said that the spending would undermine public confidence in government and politicians.

On Thursday, the JEP exclusively revealed that the two men spent £6,442 each on fully flexible business-class flights to the Investing in African Mining Indaba conference in South Africa, which took place between 6 and 11 February, and they spent a further £950 each to stay in the five-star Hilton Hotel in Capetown for the duration of their visit and justified the cost of the trip by saying that it was within States policy.

Within hours of the revelations being published, arrangements were made for the travel policy across the whole of the States to be reviewed. Economic Development bosses were also due to meet this morning to review the department’s own rules.
