THE Under-18 Muratti returns to Springfield Stadium this weekend as Steve Coutanche’s side look to back up last year’s 5-0 win in Guernsey with another strong showing on home soil.

A 1pm kick-off awaits on Sunday, with the annual inter-insular clash once again offering a first real taste of senior-style pressure for many of Jersey’s emerging talents.

Coutanche has retained a core group that has already experienced representative football in recent months, and he believes that continuity could prove key in such a high-stakes encounter.

His young side hosted an impressive Northern Ireland Schoolboys side and were denied a memorable victory in dramatic fashion as Northern Ireland Schoolboys struck deep into stoppage time to force a 3-3 draw in February.

“If you can have a settled squad as much as possible, then you go into games able to deliver a more consistent performance,” he said. “The players understand what’s expected of them.”

That familiarity has been strengthened by several members of the squad stepping up to Under-21 level and beyond, gaining exposure to the physical and mental demands of higher-level football. A select few of Sunday’s squad were also involved in Orkney for the 2025 Island Games.

“Exposure to that level of football, in terms of intensity and physicality, only helps their development,” Coutanche added. “It gives them that bit more experience coming into games like this.”

While Jersey enter the contest as defending champions at this age group, Coutanche is wary of placing too much emphasis on last year’s emphatic victory across the water. Muratti fixtures, regardless of age, rarely follow a script.

“These games are one-off cup finals,” he said. “You can’t read too much into what’s happened before, or even from other matches. Each one has to be treated on its own.”

That sense of occasion is often what defines the fixture, with the intensity and emotion of inter-island rivalry capable of swinging momentum in an instant. Managing that balance, between harnessing the occasion and not being overwhelmed by it, will be crucial.

“Murattis are always competitive,” Coutanche said. “It’s important the players focus on what we want to achieve and not get distracted by the occasion. At the end of the day, it’s still a game of football.”

Home advantage could play a significant role in that regard, with a Springfield crowd expected to turn out in strong numbers.

“It’s hugely important,” he said. “For some of these players, this is the biggest game they’ll have played in. Having that support behind them can give you that extra lift – it really can make a difference.”

Jersey’s recent age-group success, particularly at Under-21 level, offers encouragement, but Coutanche is keen to ensure his players remain grounded.

“We know Guernsey will be motivated,” he said. “They’ll want to put right what happened last year, just as we would in their position.”

With pride, bragging rights and another Muratti trophy on the line, the ingredients are in place for another fiercely contested battle.

And for Coutanche, the message to his players is a simple one: “Just go out and enjoy it.”
