DFDS is offering Islanders a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes during their upcoming event, ‘Careers at Sea Day.’
The event aims to inspire young Islanders considering a career in the maritime industry and showcase local opportunities available.
The company is the current freight and passenger provider with services running to the UK and France from Jersey, after being awarded a 20-year contract, replacing the previous provider, Condor Ferries.
The ‘Careers at Sea Day’ event is taking place on Wednesday 2 July from 11am until 3pm onboard the high-speed craft Tarifa Jet, based at Jersey Harbour, St Helier.
Islanders will have the opportunity to meet captains, officers, and various crew members to explore the different roles and career paths DFDS has to offer.
The company is offering Islanders various roles and educational opportunities to join their fleet and further their knowledge in the field through apprenticeships and programmes starting later this year.
There are a variety of roles available for aspiring seafarers within the programmes, such as a deck and engine apprenticeship as well as a deck and engine cadetship, which is available to Islanders aged 16 and above.
The company is also offering Islanders the opportunity to work onboard this summer, with customer-facing seasonal roles available immediately.
The company has said that they have an “exciting day” planned where Islanders will have the opportunity to get a “first-hand impression of all aspects of what it is like to work onboard a vessel in areas such as safety and security, environmental compliance, cargo handling, vessel maintenance and repair, engineering, navigating and creating great experiences for passengers.”
Chris Parker, DFDS Jersey Route Director, said: “We are excited to welcome enthusiastic people to join our team and embark on a rewarding career with DFDS, and we are committed to playing a positive role in the local community by creating jobs and opportunities for local Islanders and investing in Jersey for the long term.”
DFDS VP Head of Global Crewing, Gemma Griffin, added: “We are passionate about creating long-term career opportunities in the locations where we operate. Life at sea is an exciting one full of opportunities. These programmes are really special because you can enjoy the fun of working at sea and still return home every night, as high-speed craft crew do not live onboard. We have started discussions with both Ports of Jersey and Skills Jersey about our event, and we are looking forward to showcasing the ship and our great colleagues in July.”
