Rescued seal pup to be flown to Guernsey for treatment

The pup, which has been described by the Jersey branch of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue as being ‘severely underweight’, was rescued at L’Etacq by Clive Armstrong, a BDMLR marine mammal medic and JSPCA driver, along with four other team members.

Mr Armstrong and fellow medics Dave Scambler, Carole Stockhill, Andre de Gruchy and Jessica Harris assessed the pup, which was then taken to New Era Veterinary Hospital, where it is undergoing treatment for dehydration and malnutrition.

Max Hannan, the vet currently treating the pup, said it was being tube-fed fluids to rehydrate it and antibiotics for a superficial head injury until it was strong enough to be transported to the GSPCA in Guernsey.

Mr Armstrong said they hoped to pair the pup with another one found in Guernsey, so they can be rehabilitated and released together. It is hoped they will be put back in the wild by Easter 2018 at the Écréhous, which experts say has a good ecosystem for seal colonies.

Mr Armstrong added that, while they might look cute, seal pups ‘are still wild animals’ and the public should call the JSPCA or BDMLR if a washed-up seal was found.
