Jersey junior table tennis stars shine bright in British League

William Cornthwaite, Callum Allaway and Theo De Poerck helped Jersey to the top of the current standing in Division 8 of the Junior British League

FOR the first time in seven years, Jersey sent a team to the Junior British League, which was held at Derby Arena.

The Caesarean trio of William Cornthwaite, Callum Allaway and Theo De Poerck entered Division 8 as a team.

After the opening weekend, they remain unbeaten and top of the league with four wins and one draw.

De Poerck was undoubtedly the standout performer for the Islanders, going unbeaten for his first nine matches, before being edged out by Toby Caldwell of Ormeau, who was also unbeaten to that point.

Meanwhile, teenager star Hannah Silcock was in action in the BCL Girl’s Premier League for Grantham College, and after the first four matches, they were tied top with London Academy.

Like De Poerck, Silcock was on nine wins out of nine, but finally lost to Sophie Barscali of London Academy.

This meant that Grantham fell 4-2 and are lying second in the league.

Last but not least, Freya Allaway was representing Cleve Park in a newly formed team in Division 3 of the Junior Girls league.

Cleve Park finished the league top with five wins and won the accolade of girls team of the weekend.

Allaway contributed with an impressive 7 wins out of 8.

Table Tennis Jersey thanked the competitors’ parents for their support and also Jersey Sport for the travel grant.
