FUTURE training for staff to deal with incidents such as a knife assault that took place at Haute Vallée School earlier this month could take place, the Education Minister has revealed.
In the States Assembly yesterday, Deputy Rob Ward was asked by Deputy Inna Gardiner if he plans to provide additional training for staff on how to deal with this kind of incident, to which he initially replied that existing guidance had been reissued.
But, after a follow-up question from Deputy Gardiner, the Education Minister replied that his department is looking at “what possible training might be needed for staff”.
He praised the response of staff at the school during the incident, adding that their example of swift action could be used to help train others on how to handle these kind of rare situations.
It follows an incident in which a teenager – who cannot be named but was not a pupil at Haute Vallée – entered the school brandishing a knife and had to be restrained. The 15-year-old admitted a string of violent offences when he appeared before Youth Court last week.
