FARMERS Cricket Club have issued a statement of intent to their fellow Premier Division teams, with the signing of all-rounder Nick Greenwood for the month of June.
The 24-year-old professional currently plies his trade with Wellington Firebirds in New Zealand, while a regular fixture of late for the Jersey Men’s national team having been born in the Island.
As a part of the Firebirds, Greenwood regularly competes with and against the New Zealand 1st XI national squad players and is set to make his debut for Farmers tomorrow in a T20 fixture against Walkovers CC at Farmers Cricket Ground.
In the wake of securing Greenwood’s services, Farmers 1st XI captain James Perchard said: “We are extremely excited to get Nick involved at the club.
“Having a player of his calibre should add tremendous value, not only from a playing stance, but in respect of the inspiration and development of our younger players.
“Being in and around a professional player like Nick should really inspire the next crop of young cricketers coming through the ranks at Farmers and will hopefully elevate performances throughout the squad.”
The New-Zealand based cricketer is the second professional player Farmers now have on their books, along with Asa Tribe, who progressed through the club’s junior ranks and earned a contract with Welsh side Glamorgan CCC.
Not only will Greenwood aim to help Farmers return to the European Cricket League, in which Old Victorians thrive at earlier this year, he will also be involved in coaching junior players at the club.
It is an addition which is sure to excite the stars of tomorrow.
Greenwood said: “I’m excited to return to Jersey in preparation for the European T20 qualifiers in July.
“It will be great to be back in the Island and training with the group and, as part of my preparation, I’ll be playing a few games of club cricket which will be a first for me in Jersey.
“I’ve already received a few messages from some of the guys in the Jersey squad, so I’m sure there will be some great battles on the field.
“Outside of playing I’m looking forward to helping with some coaching whilst I’m here and I’d like to thank Farmers for the opportunity and support.”
Robin Smith, partner of Carey Olsen, commented, “We are delighted that part of the Carey Olsen sponsorship funding can support Nick in both playing for and coaching at Farmers. Nick is a serious talent and it’s fantastic to have such a great role model for the junior cricketers to learn from.”
Farmers Cricket Club extended their thanks to lead sponsor Carey Olsen for helping fund the addition of Greenwood to their ranks.
