Jersey Cricket finish on a high note

Jersey celebrate Dom Blampied's removal of Singapore's Surendra Chandramohan Picture: ICC

JERSEY signed off with a comfortable win in their final match of the T20 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier B tournament.

In doing so they avoided the wooden spoon and racked up some valuable ICC ranking points, the dream of qualifying for the autumn world cup in Australia having long since evaporated.

It was the second time they had defeated Singapore out in Bulawayo.

Their opponents won the toss and elected to bat on a windy day.

Singapore got off to a steady start and had compiled 27 runs off the first 28 balls when Chuggy Perchard struck.

He trapped Aman Desai LBW with a full length ball.

It was another LBW, this time for Benjamin Ward with his first ball of the match, that did for Rezza Gaznavi at the start of the seventh over.

Just two balls later, his leg break caught out Aryman Sunill, who dragged the ball wide from the off stump to the onside for a catch by Jonty Jenner having failed to trouble the scorer.

The resistance of opener Surdendran Chandramohan, who had compiled 31 runs, ended in the next over.

He had struck a six off of Dominic Blampied and was attempting another big slog only to find Asa Tribe near the boundary rope.

Singapore put up some resistance until the 12th over when Navin Param, on 23 runs, connected with a reverse sweep off Elliot Miles only to find Rhys Palmer who took an excellent catch over his shoulder.

Janak Prakash was caught by Blampied at long on with Singapore on 112, becoming Perchard’s second victim.

Top scoring for Singapore with 47, Manpreet Singh lasted until the final over of the innings when he skied a ball off Blampied which held up in the wind for Jenner to take a diving catch.

Jersey needed 141 runs to win and saw those off with more than five overs to spare.

Opener Harrison Carylon smashed the second ball of the innings through the covers for four to open the scoring, but was clearly frustrated when trapped LBW by Amjad Mahboob by the very next one.

His opening partner Nick Greenwood and Asa Tribe then put on a dominant display, making the most of the fast outfield.

They added 75 runs to the total in eight overs before Tribe was caught at long on after skying a ball from Anantha Krishna.

Greenwood, who picked up the man of the match honours for his innings that included three sixes, fell just two run shorts of a half century, bowled by the left arm spinner Baskaran in the next over.

Ward was the next victim of Baskaran, this time LBW near the end of the 11th over.

Meanwhile, Jenner was enjoying himself.

He smashed 39 runs off 21 balls, finishing the match off with a flourish in the 15th over – a six followed by three consecutive fours settling affairs.
