ONE point. One place. One enormous showdown. The Jersey Bulls will look to carry the momentum from last weekend’s emphatic 6-1 victory over AFC Croydon Athletic at Springfield as they head into a crucial play-off clash away to AFC Whyteleafe tomorrow afternoon.
Just a single point separates the sides heading into the contest, with the Bulls sitting fifth on 52 points and Whyteleafe one place higher in fourth with 53, as the Island side continues its debut push at Step 4. The Bulls will be hoping to dismantle their second AFC side in seven days.
Bulls manager Elliot Powell is expecting another close affair between two teams who have become well accustomed to one another, stating: “Every game we’ve played against them it’s been 1-0, so we’re expecting another tight one,” he said.
“We’ve put ourselves in a really good position over the last six weeks and if we can get a result – whether that’s a draw or a win – it keeps the momentum going and puts a bit of pressure back on Whyteleafe.”
Both teams currently occupy the final play-off spots, setting the stage for a compelling encounter between two familiar foes with recent history. Jersey Bulls claimed a narrow 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture back in October, with Rai Dos Santos’ first-half strike proving decisive at Springfield.
Despite that rivalry, Powell was quick to highlight the size of the challenge facing his side this weekend, explaining: “They’re on a bit of a sticky run but they’re a really talented side, especially at home,” he said. “They’ve got the second-best home record in the league so it’s going to be a really tough game for us.”
The rivalry is still fresh after last season’s Combined Counties South East title race, where Whyteleafe edged the championship following the Bulls’ late three-point deduction. However, since the unusual end to last season, both sides have evinced their class at Step 4 level.

While the Bulls also recorded a 1-0 away win at Church Road during that campaign, the hosts now boast a much-changed squad that has adapted impressively to life in the Isthmian South East Division.
Whyteleafe’s strength at home presents a stern test, having suffered just three defeats from their 15 league fixtures at Church Road this season – the second-best home record in the division.
Nonetheless, the Bulls arrive full of confidence following a dominant second-half display last weekend – something their manager believes could prove decisive if replicated.
“If we can put in a performance like we did in the second half last week, we’ve got a really good chance,” he added.
Powell also acknowledged the wider context of the play-off race, admitting that the Bulls see the battle for fifth as a straight shootout between the two clubs.
“We looked at Croydon and Faversham as free hits really – for us, it’s pretty much between us and Whyteleafe for fifth.
With that in mind, Saturday’s encounter represents an opportunity for the Bulls to take control of their own destiny.
“We got off to a great start last week and now we’ve got to follow it up with a good performance and a result here,” Powell said. “We’ll look to soak up a bit of pressure and hit them on the counter, use our set-pieces, it worked well against Croydon and hopefully we can do the same again.”
The Bulls are without top scorer Lorne Bickley, with the margins so fine and momentum building at both ends, Saturday’s encounter could prove pivotal in shaping the play-off picture, ahead of the Bulls home fixture to third placed Faversham Town the following week.
Archie’s Predicted XI

I think Elliot Powell will play with a 5-3-2 formation this weekend, as he did against Ashford United.
I have decided on a back line consisting of Euan Van Der Vliet, Jay Giles, Jamie Watling, James Querée, Luke Campbell and Jonny Le Quesne.
My midfield three is a well-balanced trio of Luke Watson holding, with Adam Trotter and Joe Kilshaw ahead of him.
For the front two, I think Toby Ritzema and Rai Dos Santos could prove a threat to a strong Whyteleafe defence.
