Josh Brien produced a dominant display to take victory in the Jersey Spartans Athletics Club’s 10km road race on Sunday morning, as runners were tested by torrential conditions along the north coast.
Starting and finishing at Les Platons, the two-lap course proved particularly challenging, with heavy rain leaving large puddles for the 46-strong field to contend with throughout the race.
Brien, a long-standing Spartans runner, was undeterred by the weather and quickly asserted control at the front of the race. As the kilometres ticked by, he steadily increased his lead to finish unchallenged in a time of 33 minutes 55 seconds.
Avelino De Jesus claimed second place, while Jess Troy delivered one of the standout performances of the day, finishing third overall and first female in an impressive 37 minutes 56 seconds. Her effort earned her the ‘Run of the Day’ award.
Scott Welsh followed closely behind Troy to finish fourth overall and third male, crossing the line just nine seconds later.
Despite running while battling a cold, Fran Monticelli secured second female honours with a strong seventh-place finish, while Rosie Adamson completed the women’s podium in ninth place overall.
Jersey Spartans extended their thanks to the timekeepers and marshals who endured the wet conditions to ensure the event ran smoothly.
The club’s next fixture is the age-graded West Park 5km on Tuesday 10 February, starting at 6.30pm, with entries and further information available at www.jerseyspartan.com.
