Royals RFC face one of their most important fixtures of the season tomorrow as they travel to Eastbourne to take on their arch-rivals in a crucial battle at the foot of Counties 2 Sussex.
With relegation looming, the encounter carries added significance for both sides, who were promoted together last season following a dramatic and controversial campaign finale. Since then, a fierce rivalry has developed, and if their first meeting of the season is any indication, another tight and hard-fought contest is in store.
That October clash at CoinShares Park saw the Royals push Eastbourne II all the way, only to suffer heartbreak in the dying moments as the visitors edged a 36–34 victory.

Vice-captain Pearse Moloney (left) remembers the encounter vividly and believes the stakes could hardly be higher this time around.
‘Of course the rivalry is still huge,’ he said. ‘Most of our games against Eastbourne have historically come down to a point or two, and with one win apiece so far, it’s important that we break the tie tomorrow.’
The men in blue have endured a testing campaign on their return to this level, registering just one victory so far. However, recent performances have offered encouragement, and a win over their closest rivals could provide a significant confidence boost while lifting them above Eastbourne in the league standings.
‘A win is crucial,’ Moloney added. ‘We want to avoid relegation and Eastbourne are probably our closest contender. As always, everyone’s excited for the game, and we feel that our recent improvement has put us in a good position to win.’
With pride, momentum and league survival on the line, all the signs point towards another gripping chapter in an increasingly fierce rivalry.
Action from Eastbourne is scheduled for a 12.30pm start.
