Match of the Week
Integritas JHC Lions 4 – 3 Ladies Island 1st XI
In torrential rain and blustery conditions, JHC Lions and the Ladies 1st XI served up a thrilling encounter that swung back and forth before being settled in the very last play of the game.
The Lions started strongly, dominating possession and applying sustained pressure inside the Ladies’ D. Their persistence was rewarded midway through the first half when they deservedly took the lead, capitalising on a well-worked attacking move that finally broke through the stubborn Ladies’ defence.
After the break, the Ladies regrouped impressively and began to find gaps in the Lions’ usually disciplined backline. Their equaliser came from a well-executed short corner routine, clinically finished to bring the score level. Minutes later, they went ahead through a moment of quality from Sarah Jenkins, house deft deflected lob left Lions’ keeper James Stearn flapping helplessly as the ball looped into the net.
The Lions, uncharacteristically disjointed in midfield, struggled to find their usual rhythm and simple passing patterns. However, their trademark threat on the counter remained alive, with Stephen Moore particularly dangerous when driving forward from deep. The pressure eventually paid off when Adrian Heelis coolly converted a penalty flick to restore parity at 2–2.
As the game opened up, both sides pushed hard for the decisive goal. With ten minutes remaining, the Ladies once again took the lead, another smartly worked short corner ending with Kerry Rogers deflecting the ball home at the far post. Yet the Lions’ response was immediate – a scrappy close-range finish from Nick Heins bringing the score to 3–3.
With time ticking away, the Lions pressed higher, pushing Ed Loader into a more advanced role. Their persistence paid off in dramatic fashion with the final play of the match. A slick series of quick passes in front of the Ladies’ goal found Harry Brooks sliding in at full stretch to deflect the ball home at the far post — sealing a 4–3 victory for the Lions.
Despite the horrendous weather conditions, both teams played with great spirit and determination, providing an enthralling contest for the spectators. Credit also to the umpires for managing the game superbly in such challenging circumstances.
