LOCAL football action resumed across the island this weekend, with matches in two divisions alongside one cup fixture, battling against blustery conditions that made play a challenge for even the most seasoned sides.
With gusts reaching up to 79km/h on Saturday afternoon, the weather proved a major factor in several encounters.
Premiership 1
Jersey Wanderers Firsts adapted best, maintaining their position at the top of the table and remaining the only unbeaten side in the division after a commanding 4–0 win over Madeira FC.
An Archie Corbett corner opened the scoring in unusual fashion, the swirling wind carrying the ball directly into the net. Winger Josh Coutanche doubled the lead soon after with an excellent solo effort.
Substitute Jack Hardisty then continued his fine run of form, striking twice after the break to seal the result, marking his sixth goal in seven games.
St Clement Firsts remain close behind the league leaders after edging past Grouville Firsts in a hard-fought contest. Connor Maher’s goal on the stroke of half-time proved decisive, guiding the Anchors to another valuable three points.
Despite a late red card for midfielder Olly Rivers, St Clement held firm to consign Grouville to another defeat. Both Grouville and Madeira remain at the bottom of the table, still searching for their first league victory of the campaign.
St Peter Firsts’ strong start to the Premiership 1 season came to an abrupt halt as St Ouen produced a ruthless performance to claim a 4–1 victory.
The visitors were on the front foot from the outset, with Jamie Burrows opening the scoring from the spot, before Renato Geraldo doubled the lead just three minutes later to leave the Crosskeys stunned. St Ouen continued to press their advantage, and Evan Nobes added a third as the hosts struggled to regain control.
Geraldo capped off a superb individual display with a stunning curled strike from outside the box, his second of the match, to put the result beyond doubt.
Luke Lister scored for St Peter before the interval, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation on a day dominated by St Ouen’s composure and clinical finishing.
The final Premiership 1 fixture of the weekend saw an emphatic comeback from St Paul’s First against a depleted St Brelade First side.
St Paul’s Firsts produced a spirited second-half display to overturn a two-goal deficit and defeat St Brelade 3–2 in an entertaining Premiership 1 encounter.
Hesbon Ndagona Chama gave St Brelade an early lead after 12 minutes, finishing calmly to put his side in front. Dane McCormick then doubled the advantage on the half-hour mark, leaving St Paul’s with plenty to do as the Fish took a comfortable cushion into the break.
However, the second half belonged to the youthful St Paul’s side, who showed impressive resilience and attacking flair. Sonny Cassidy sparked the comeback with a well-taken goal nine minutes after the restart, before Callum Gilroy levelled proceedings with a composed finish on 84 minutes.
Substitute Louis Robinson then sealed the turnaround in dramatic fashion, scoring just four minutes after coming off the bench to complete a memorable comeback for the young side.
Jersey FA Cup ‘Le Riche Trophy’
Rozel Rovers Firsts carried their fine league form into the cup this weekend, cruising past Dragoes de Jersey with a commanding 7–1 victory, their second consecutive scoreline of that margin in just a week.
With the Jersey Bulls enjoying a weekend off, winger Harry McKenzie featured for Rozel and proved the difference from the outset.
The young prospect was in sensational form, scoring all four of Rozel’s goals inside the opening 20 minutes. His third, a superb strike into the top corner, was the pick of the bunch as Rozel raced into a 4–0 lead.
Dragoes pulled one back through Filipe Balelo on 34 minutes, but the result was never in doubt as Rozel continued to dominate.
Two own goals from the hosts after the break, followed by a late strike from Spencer Gray, completed the rout and sealed Rozel’s passage into the next round.
Championship 2
St Ouen’s Reserves produced a commanding performance to dethrone Grouville Reserves at the top of Championship 2, claiming a 4–1 victory that also moves them one point clear with a game in hand.
The visitors set the tone early, with goals from Joel Vieira, Marco Zocchi and Stewart Daynes giving St Ouen’s a comfortable 3–0 lead at the break.
The second half proved more evenly contested, but Dominic Pougeolle’s well-taken strike added a fourth to seal the win. Grouville’s Calvin Antunes netted a late consolation, though it did little to alter the outcome.
Elsewhere in the division, St Clement Reserves maintained pressure on the leaders thanks to a brace from Taylor Roche in their victory over St Peter Reserves. The result leaves the Yellows just two points off the top.
St Brelade were forced to scratch their fixture against Jersey Wanderers Reserves after several players were called up to the first team, handing Wanderers all three points by default.
