DURING the hottest weekend of the year, six swimmers from Jersey Swimming Club travelled to the UK, delivering a series of remarkable performances in the Aldershot Garrison Summer Open Meet.

The Level 2 short course meet attracted swimmers from across the region, providing a competitive yet supportive environment where the Jersey athletes thrived, showcasing their talent and commitment to the sport.

Despite sweltering conditions, the team remained focused and united, cheering one another on from the poolside and celebrating each success. Every swimmer delivered personal bests, while several also brought home medals and broke long-standing club records.

Joseph Barrett (13) recorded an impressive seven personal best times across his events, demonstrating his rapid development. Joshua Opio (10) secured four gold medals in the 50m backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and 100m freestyle, alongside two personal bests.

Isabella Richardson (15) also showed signs of improvement, achieving an impressive three personal best times.

In doing so, he broke three Jersey Swimming Club records: the 50m freestyle (held by Richard Le Cuirot since 2002), the 100m freestyle (held by Simon Abels since 1990), and the 50m butterfly (also held by Abels since 1991).

Jessica Sulit (12) delivered four personal bests and earned a bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke, a record previously held by Hana Maddison. She also broke a club record in the 50m backstroke, surpassing a time set by Melanie Colter in 1994.

Penny Wilson (10) had a standout meet, setting new personal bests in each of her seven events. She broke five club records in the 50m freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, 100m butterfly, and 100m individual medley, and claimed gold medals in both the 50m freestyle and butterfly.

This success was a testament to the tireless work of the swimmers and the guidance of their coaches. The team’s preparation, discipline, and resilience were clearly reflected in their performances, marking another milestone in Jersey Swimming Club’s pursuit of excellence.
