Rugby reaction: Championship heartache for Reds

A narrow defeat for fourth-placed Bedford against Doncaster offered the Reds the chance of taking the battle for the last play-off spot into the final weekend, if they could recover from a ragged first-half display against Ealing.

But the hosts had their own prize to play for, knowing that a win would ensure Championship survival, and the Londoners were eventually able to withstand Jersey’s comeback and ensure Moseley will be the side heading down to level three. Richmond will replace them after a win over Hartpury College secured the National One title with two games to spare.

Head coach Harvey Biljon was left to lament a display in which his team were competitive for just half of the contest.

‘We all recognise that you need to play for 80 minutes, but today we only played for 40,’ he said.

Report and reaction in Monday’s JEP.
