Cycling: Gold Coast mark for Ashton

The Islander, who won six gold medals during last summer’s NatWest Island Games, finished 94 seconds clear of her nearest rival at the Manx International Grand Prix and also picked up the ‘Queen of the Mountains’ title after winning two mini-sprints within the main race.

Ashton’s placing far exceeded the top-ten requirement set for a place in Jersey’s team for Gold Coast 2018.

‘It’s the biggest win of my career so far – I think it probably exceeds the Island Games,’ she said. ‘I had to get a top-ten finish at a national event to qualify for the Commonwealth Games, so that’s me done now – I can just go out and enjoy the racing.’
