Team Jersey: On track for a cracking show

  • Team Jersey complete as athletics officials name a squad of 43 for NatWest Island Games.
  • Number of home athletes due to compete at Jersey 2015 outnumbers that seen in 1997 by over 40.

TEAM JERSEY welcomed its final members for this month’s NatWest Island Games today as the hosts’ track and field competitors were named.

Following Sunday’s deadline for final qualification, 43 athletes have been called into action by selectors for the six days of competition at FB Fields, and they will form part of a 265-strong Jersey contingent for the 16th edition of the biennial festival of sport.

The 2015 team total outnumbers that seen at the 1997 home Games, when 224 Islanders donned the Jersey tracksuit in 14 sports.

Two of the 52 athletics representatives who battled for silverware 18 years ago have once again been handed a Games vest, with 400-metre hurdler Claire Lidster and versatile thrower Paul Derrien set for their seventh and 12th appearances, respectively.

Brother-sister duo Zane and Shadine Duquemin will also be present as they seek to break their own Games records in the shot putt and discus, Dan Halksworth ­- a gold medal favourite for the triathlon team – runs in the 10,000m, and 17-year-old high jumper Holly Widdowson follows in the footsteps of her father, Ed, who competed in the javelin at Jersey 1997.

Athletics begins on the morning of Sunday 28 June with the half-marathon, which starts and finishes at FB Fields.
