Jersey thump Northern Ireland but miss qualification

Sport | Published:

Having whitewashed Mauritius on Thursday before losing 5-0 to England yesterday, Jersey knew they had to record a resounding win to stand any chance of qualifying for the last eight.

They did all they could, dropping just one game on their way to beating Northern Ireland, but New Zealand and Australia progressed ahead of Jersey as the two best-placed group runners-up.

Alex Hutchings and Mariana Agathangelou beat Ciaran and Sinead Chambers 21-14, 21-16, before Mark Constable bettered Tony Stephenson 21-16, 21-8.

Liz Cann defeated Alannah Stephenson 21-12, 21-15, Constable and Hutchings beat Ciaran Chambers and Tony Murphy 21-18, 17-21, 21-18, and Agathangelou and Cann completed the rout with a 21-9, 21-18 win over Sinead Chambers and Caroline Black.

The Jersey players will have a few days rest before the singles and doubles events start on Tuesday.
