It’s certainly a quality-line up for the Sid Guy Memorial Award, for long-service to sport, and the Colin Welsh Memorial, for unsung hero.

Just who has won what will not be revealed until Friday evening, 23 March, at the Royal Yacht – a new venue for the ceremony which plans to showcase all that is best in Island sport.

Nominations were released to the media at a meeting of the council last evening at the New Gilson Hall, La Pouquelaye, and are as follows:

Carole Penfold, for dedicated involvement in swimming; Eileen Vowden who has a multi-sport involvement over many decades, including netball, golf, bowls and Island Games; Steve Landick, a sports enthusiast in football and cricket who has prepared many a perfect sporting surface as a groundsman over the years; Lawrence de Gruchy, for 30 years in the service of lawn bowls; Chris Band for his enormously positive influence in the table tennis arena; Morag Obarska’s huge backing of sport in general and the Island Touch Association in particular; Tony Allchurch, ‘Mr Pétanque’ to many, as a top-ranking official, coach and development officer over many years; and Kevin Gell, for his extra-ordinary efforts as a member of the Jersey Motor and Light Car Club’s rally committee.
