Getting ready for tonight’s £90,000-plus opening ceremony of the 14th NatWest Island Games in Ryde, Isle of Wight, many of the older members of the 250-strong Jersey contingent will doubtless recall the last Games held off the coast of Hampshire some 18 years ago.

The 1993 Games were certainly memorable for Jersey as they finished top of the table (winning the now defunct Top Island Trophy) for the first time, collected gold in the football final, again for the first time – and won the right to host the Games in Jersey four years later.
