THE hilly terrain of Queen’s Valley provided runners with a stiff challenge in the Advisa Cross Country League on Saturday.

On the longest course of the series, runners competed across four age groups for medals and series points.

The seven and eight-year-old boys and girls were first away along the far side of the reservoir to run about three-quarters of a mile. Despite the uphill start the pace was frantic until the runners hit the hills and the pace soon slowed.

The nine and ten-year-old boys and girls completed the bottom loop of the reservoir, a distance of about a mile and a quarter. Runners crossed the bridge to return down the east side before a sprint finish across the top of the dam.

The 11 and 12 and 13 and 14-year age groups all ran the challenging two-mile loop of the reservoir. At this level a number of competitors were using the race as a test of current form and as part of their build up towards the Hampshire County Championships in January.

The winners of the different races were:

Girls 7-8 years: Emma Dempsey, by one second over Naomi de la Haye; Girls 9-10 years: Gemma Gothard; Girls 11-12 years: Emily Boulter: Girls 13-14 years: Danielle Leerson by three seconds over Chloe Turmel.

Boys 7-8 years: Jack Leerson; Boys 9-10 years: James Dempsey by five seconds over Nathan de la Haye; Boys 11-12 years: Tom Ward; Boys 13-14 years: Aaron Turmel.
