LAST week, in the final official piece of business for the States Assembly in 2011, Members exchanged Christmas messages. In a long-standing tradition, one Senator, one Constable and one Deputy each gave a speech on behalf of their colleagues reminiscing about the past year, looking to the future and sending their best wishes to, well, pretty much everyone, including the ever-important tea ladies and even us, the media.

Debating a brighter Budget
THE States, as currently constituted, face one last major task before the Assembly is reconstituted on the basis of the results of the recent elections. That task is to examine and vote on the proposals in the Budget for 2011 and the amendments accompanying them.This process can be seen as an anomaly – in the sense that today’s House will set the agenda for a new one with, in all probability, a distinctly different political complexion.
