Senator Philip Ozouf, who in the past has supported plans to increase the population to boost the economy, has admitted that the figure was higher than he had expected. But he has warned against knee-jerk reactions and says that no conclusions should be drawn until more details from the census are released next week.

‘The number is higher than ministers had been expecting,’ he said. ‘If you had asked me I would have said it was about 96,000, looking at the employment numbers. There are going to be all sorts of knee-jerk reactions. I would caution anybody from drawing any conclusions in terms of what to do and what not to do until we actually have the data to understand it.’
