AN Islander is raising thousands of pounds for charity as he prepares to run three UK marathons across three consecutive weekends in memory of his son who died of a brain tumour aged just six.
David Watson will take on the ABP Southampton Marathon on 11 April, Manchester Marathon on Sunday 18 April and the London Marathon on Sunday 25 April.
He is doing so in memory of his son Jax, who was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain tumour on 19 January 2021 and died in Southampton on 19 April 2024.
Mr Watson said: “Jax basically grew up in hospital, from a toddler to a six-year-old.
“Although it was tough for him, we were proud and inspired by the way he carried himself and how brave he was. He was an amazing, very cool little boy – kind, thoughtful and funny.”
Mr Watson explained that he had chosen the three marathons because the cities are those where Jax received treatment.
“And with them all being a week apart, I thought it would make a good challenge,” he continued.
“I hope to make Jax proud and prove to myself that I can complete a difficult physical and mental challenge inspired by him. Running has helped me cope over the past few years.”
Jax was a little brother to Alba (12) and a big brother to Mase (4). The Manchester Marathon weekend will mark three years since his death and will also mark the first birthday of Jax’s new little brother, Arlie.

Mr Watson is raising funds for The Brain Tumour Charity.
His online fundraising page had surpassed £7,000 by the end of last week.
“I want to put my boy’s name out there, raise awareness of The Brain Tumour Charity and try and get as much funds for that charity as I can,” he said.
Mr Watson thanked everyone supporting him.
Commenting on his preparations, the 44-year-old said he was running around three or four times a week while also going to the gym to do strength and conditioning.
