A PROJECT to implement safety improvements in the former railway tunnels in St Aubin is being prepared for tender, the Infrastructure Department has confirmed in the wake of “positive feedback” on the proposed improvements.

Planning permission for the upgrades, which include the installation of fire screens and fire doors with security gates added to main tunnel and galleries, was granted at the end of last year.

The cover letter accompanying the application said that the improvements would help ensure a “safe and sustainable” future for the site’s tenants.

In a recent update provided to the JEP, the Infrastructure Department stated that the project design “is now largely complete”.

The statement continued: “The remaining technical and approval work is being finalised before updated costs are confirmed, funding sought, and the project is prepared for tender.

“We have engaged with stakeholders throughout the process and have received positive feedback on the proposed improvements.”
