A PRIMARY school that was forced to close because of a flood caused by a burst hot water cylinder will reopen for all pupils today, the head teacher has confirmed.

Students at d’Auvergne School in St Helier were instructed to stay at home yesterday morning following flooding on Wednesday night.

Head teacher Sam Cooper said that water leaked out of the school’s burst high-pressure water main “for many hours”, causing a section of the first floor to become submerged.

An electrical firm undertaking work outside of school hours alerted school authorities to the flood at 6am on Thursday morning.

A decision was taken to close the school during the morning when it became apparent that it was necessary to turn off the school’s entire water supply to address the leak.

“We are sorted now,” Mr Cooper said. “We were back open [yesterday] afternoon to most pupils, except Year 1 and Year 5, because their parts of the school were most affected.”

Mr Cooper confirmed that the school will be open for Year 1 and Year 5 today.

“We’re back up and running, he added. “I appreciate the support of the departmental colleagues and the patience of our community.”
