PUPILS heading back to school today – and States Members heading back to the Chamber for the first time after the summer – were welcomed by some thoroughly miserable weather, with heavy rain and strong winds hitting Jersey as the summer holidays come to an end.
Jersey Met has issued a yellow wind warning for the Channel Islands Shipping Area, with disruption to sea travel and damage to moored boats possible.
The warning, issued at 8.45am, says south to south-westerly Force 6 winds with gusts of up to 35 knots are expected to veer north-westerly imminently.
On land, the forecast is not much cheerier for the school run.
Heavy rain is expected at times this morning, with a 100% chance of precipitation and winds strengthening later. Conditions should begin improving around midday, with the rain clearing and sunny spells increasing during the afternoon – although winds will remain fresh and gusty at first.
Temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 20°C.
There is better news for anyone already missing the summer holidays: Wednesday is forecast to bring sunny spells and a high of 19°C, before temperatures climb through the week to a forecast 24°C on Sunday.
