A PART-TIME road closure introduced near Victoria College Preparatory School is to become permanent following a successful year-long trial.
Clarence Road will be closed to vehicles during the morning and afternoon school rush on term-time weekdays from tomorrow (Tuesday 8 September).
The restriction will apply between the road’s junctions with Grosvenor Street, Pleasant Street and College Hill from 7.45am to 8.45am and from 2.45pm to 3.45pm.
The crossing was developed as part of the government’s Safer Routes to School project and trialled from 2 June 2025 until 17 July this year.
During that period, it operated on school days at peak times in an attempt to provide pedestrians with a safer route.
According to a report accompanying the ministerial decision, an average of 290 pedestrians used the new crossing during school peak hours, while more than 2,000 people crossed at the junction on each school day.
The document said the trial had delivered “significant transport benefits”, including changes in the way pedestrians crossed the road safely.
The decision to make the arrangement permanent followed an analysis of data collected during the trial and consultation with Victoria College Preparatory School.
The scheme forms part of the government’s Sustainable Transport Policy, which aims to make walking and cycling more attractive, particularly for school and commuter journeys.
It also supports the Carbon Neutral Roadmap target of achieving a 7.5% shift towards active travel by 2030.
The Road Traffic (St Helier) (Jersey) Order 1996 will now be amended to formally introduce the term-time restrictions.
