A PETITION calling for the States to organise a free public fireworks display on New Year’s Eve has been launched.
The proposal says that the event should preferably be staged from Elizabeth Castle and argues that Jersey currently lacks a major public celebration to mark the arrival of the new year.
It had attracted 35 signatures at the time of writing, with 1,000 required before a response from the relevant minister would be triggered.
Harrison Berresford, who launched the petition, pointed to the popularity of last year’s display in St Aubin’s Bay as evidence of “strong public interest” in such an event.
“The States should organise a free public New Year’s Eve fireworks display, preferably from Elizabeth Castle,” he wrote.
“Jersey lacks a major public New Year’s Eve celebration. An organised fireworks display would bring residents and visitors together.”
The petition argues that an annual display could become a major community occasion comparable to the Gorey Fête and the Battle of Flowers.
It also claims that the proposed celebration would benefit local businesses and encourage visitors to come to the Island during the quieter winter season.
“A free public fireworks display would be a popular community event and could become a highlight for both residents and tourists,” added Mr Berresford.
