MORE than 2,000 children in Jersey have already signed up for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages young people to enjoy books during the summer holidays.
This year’s challenge is called ‘ Read to the Beat!’. It celebrates the link between reading, music and creativity.
Children can read books, discover new characters and stories, and collect rewards as they go.
The challenge is for children aged four to 11, while younger children aged up to three can take part in a special mini challenge.
Library staff say they have loved seeing so many families getting involved.
Children have until Saturday 19 September to complete the challenge, and anyone who has not signed up yet can still join by visiting Jersey Library, the Communicare library or the mobile library.
There are also lots of fun events happening alongside the challenge. One highlight is Mr Martie’s Marvellous Melodies, where children can enjoy a live musical story, sing along and join in with the performance.
Families can also make musical instrument crafts, including trumpets, pan pipes and sleigh bells, at special creative workshops.
The Summer Reading Challenge is organised by The Reading Agency and libraries across the country.
It aims to help children discover the joy of reading while having fun during the holidays.
