A FAMILY from San Sebastián is preparing to become the first Spanish team to complete a 14-mile relay swim from Jersey to France – raising money for charity in the process.

‘Team Spain’ captain Jorge Postigo, who is living in London, will be taking on the Jersey France Challenge on 8 August alongside his brothers Iván and Marco as well as his nephew Kai, who live in Madrid.

They will also be supported by Mr Postigo’s daughter, Blanca, who is a doctor in Jersey and will be on board the RIB as the team doctor.

The three brothers completed a swim across the Strait of Gibraltar in 2018 in support of cancer research.

The Jersey France Challenge will once again raise funds for Dementia Jersey, with Mr Postigo noting the cause is “very close to our family”.

His team’s online fundraising page had secured over £1,500 of its £8,000 target as of Friday afternoon.

Mr Postigo cited diet, as well as training – mostly in swimming pools – and rest as the three pillars of preparation being focused on.

The group has been training separately but will be coming together for some open water swimming this month, which he described as “a good preparation milestone for the big event on 8 August”.

The Team Spain donation page can be found on the sportsgiving.co.uk website.

The Jersey France Challenge

The 14-mile challenge is open to teams of two to six people, each competing head to head to be the first team to cross the finish line.

The relay swim is set to begin from the shores of La Coupe Bay, this year taking teams to the beach north of Carteret Marina.
