THE Rubis Jersey International Motoring Festival is adding breaks in its busy schedule on Sunday to allow residents in the People’s Park and Westmount area to get to the polls.
Now in its 26th year, the three-day event has always been held on the first weekend in June – however, this year, the Island’s general election will be held on Sunday, the first time Islanders have cast their vote on a Sunday.
That day, the Inner Road from George V Cottage Homes to Cheapside, along with Peirson Road, and Westmount Road as far as the Crematorium will be closed, with the People’s Park and Lower Park hosting cars, entertainment, and food and drink stalls.
There will also be a hill climb up Westmount and time trials around a lower circuit.
However, this year, festival organisers have tweaked the schedule – moving the action around the arena to create pauses for residents to get out and cast their ballot.
One of the organisers, Alex Salmon, said: “When the States decided to go for a 7 June election, we did have a slight panic and contemplated moving the festival. However, we checked with the Bailiff’s Office, who gave us the assurance that everything would be fine.
“We also have lots of visitors who had already booked to come here.
“However, we obviously recognise the importance of the day, so we have put gaps in the schedule and have also written to all residents sharing details of how to pre-poll. The letter also shares when the pauses will be next Sunday but if anyone needs more information, they can email info@jimf.je.”
Motorists are also reminded that Victoria Avenue and its approach roads will be closed between First Tower and West Park from 6.30pm until midnight on Friday.
