AN appeal has been launched against approved plans to turn one of the three reversing bay on South Hill into a temporary skate park, which will then become a cycle park when Fort Regent is developed.

Nearby resident Jeremy Gosselin has lodged a third-party appeal on the basis that, when taken separately, neither the skate nor cycle parks comply with a key policy of the Bridging Island Plan.

He argues that “the small number of children that might benefit for a short time from the cycle park could not possibly justify the permanent adverse impact on the setting of […] heritage assets, including the old boundary and the property called La Caumine on the opposite of the road.”

Plans proposed by the government’s Infrastructure Department to build a moveable skatepark surrounded by acoustic fencing, with a toilet block and covered bike parking nearby, were approved by the Planning Committee in March.

The idea is that the skatepark will move up the hill to Fort Regent in 2028, when it is due to reopen as a new community and leisure centre, and then the space will be converted into a cycle park.

The skatepark has been designed to replace the New North Quay skatepark, which closed several years ago.
