A JERSEY-BORN student nurse has been awarded a top honour for her work in giving her peers a voice and encouraging union engagement.

Mary Bichard, an adult and child nursing masters student at the University of Southampton, scooped the title Student Ambassador of the Year at the Royal College of Nursing 2026 awards.

Ellen McNicholas, RCN south-east regional director said: “Colleagues who nominated her said that Mary is one of the reasons that the South East has a strong student voice as she encourages others to get involved in the RCN.

“At university she has consistently held a role on the nursing society committee and has welcomed new students into the society.”

Ms Bichard said: “I am very grateful and surprised by the award from the College for the work I have been able to do over the last three years. Most of all, I want to say thank you to all the RCN staff and members who have supported me in the work I have engaged in.

“Furthermore, thank you to my academics. I hope what I have done has made life a little easier for nursing and allied health professional students who work so hard to become confident practitioners.”
