ISLANDERS are being reminded not to tackle fires themselves after an individual had to be treated by paramedics following a blaze in Grouville.
Emergency services were called to a fire on La Grand Route des Sablons, opposite La Rue de la Forge, shortly after 6:20pm on Monday evening.
Before firefighters arrived, one individual tried to fight the blaze and later required treatment at the scene as a precaution.
Fire crews said the incident highlights the risks of attempting to tackle fires without proper equipment or training, and are reminding the public to “get out, stay out and call” emergency services.
At the height of the incident, 16 firefighters, three appliances and a duty officer were on scene. Crews arrived to find that a large outbuilding fire had spread to a parked vehicle.
Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters used hose jets to extinguish the flames and carried out checks to ensure no one was inside nearby buildings.
All occupants were safely accounted for, and the fire was contained to the outbuilding and the car.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but is not currently being treated as suspicious.
The States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service thanked an off-duty firefighter who raised the alarm, as well as police and ambulance crews who assisted at the scene.
