PLANS to build 23 homes on derelict glasshouses in St Ouen have been approved.

The site off Rue des Cosnets near Les Landes Primary School was rezoned for affordable homes in 2022, when the Bridging Island Plan was adopted. 13 houses will be available to buy through the government’s Housing Gateway and ten for rent through Andium Homes.

On Thursday, the Planning Committee – a group of politicians who determine larger and more controversial application – unanimously approved the scheme, which will comprise two two-bed, 13 three-bed, and eight four-bed homes.

Several residents spoke against the proposal at the committee meeting, expressing concerns about the lack of parking and the consequential overflow onto surrounding roads, the impact of two proposed houses on an existing neighbouring property, and the general overdevelopment of the Island.

However, the politicians backed the recommendation of the planning officer assigned to the case that the scheme – brought forward by Ashbe Construction – should be supported.

The houses will be able to connect to mains drains once a giant storage tank currently being dug near the Airport is completed.
