A TRIP to Portelet Bay this summer could involve a pizza, beer, swim and sauna, if plans by the café and restaurant are approved.

Portelet Bay Café has applied to Planning to build a sauna to the west of the raised building, with windows overlooking the beach, sea and the distinctive Ile au Guerdain.

If supported, a timber-clad cabin housing an electric heating unit will be erected on an existing concrete platform, meaning that no new foundations or excavation is needed.

Business co-owner Piers Ostroumoff told the JEP that beachside saunas “were the future and not a fad” and it would help extend the café’s season.

A planning statement included in the application states: “This application seeks planning permission for a small, single-storey, timber-clad electric sauna to operate as an appurtenance to the existing Portelet Bay Café within the island’s sensitive coastal environment and Coastal National Park context.”

It adds: “The proposal delivers public benefit through a managed, low-intensity wellbeing offer and supports the resilience of an established visitor facility, while avoiding material harm to landscape/seascape character, travel/transport, and the water environment.”
