JERSEY Wanderers strengthened their grip on the Premiership 1 title race by collecting six points in three days with victories over fellow challengers St Paul’s and Grouville.
Wanderers began the week with a crucial 2-0 win over St Paul’s on Thursday night in a top-of-the-table clash. Archie Corbett and Casey Nixon struck within seven minutes of each other shortly after the hour mark to secure the victory.
They followed that up with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Grouville. Jack Hardisty and Arthur Illingworth overturned Callum Barry’s strike – scored directly from a corner – to complete the six-point haul.
The results leave Wanderers 12 points clear of St Paul’s in second place.
St Paul’s dropped further ground after being held to a 2-2 draw by St Brelade. Callum Gilroy and Matty Davy put Paul’s ahead, but second-half strikes from Leighton Gilroy and Will Yates earned St Brelade a share of the spoils.
St Ouen’s continued their recent upturn in form with a 2-0 victory over Madeira, following last weekend’s dramatic 5-4 win against St Brelade. Renato Geraldo opened the scoring after 40 minutes before Jamie Burrows sealed the win from the penalty spot with 15 minutes remaining as St Ouen’s edged further away from the relegation battle.
St Clement First also enjoyed a convincing afternoon, defeating Guernsey’s Northeners 4-0 to book their place in the Wheway Memorial Trophy final. Paul Burton, Seaney McColgan, Bruno Da Silva and Jay Dos Santos all found the net.
They will face either Vale Recreation or St Paul’s in the final, with the remaining semi-final scheduled for March 28.
In Premiership 2, promotion contenders Rozel Rovers and Sporting Academics shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. The result keeps the sides firmly in the promotion picture, with just one league defeat between them so far this season.
Rozel remain three points behind Accies but hold two games in hand.
Elsewhere, St John First produced an emphatic 8-2 victory over Dragoes de Jersey. Max Cooper and Alex Thompson each scored twice, with Ethan Boudin, Noah Trench, Luke Packwood and Mailen Hughes also on target.
Sports Club of Jersey also secured three points with a 3-1 win against St Lawrence First.
In Championship 1, Jersey Wanderers Reserves strengthened their title challenge with a 4–0 win over St Peter Reserves. Zac Traynor and Jack Browning were joined on the scoresheet by two own goals, closing the gap to leaders St Ouen’s Reserves to five points with a game in hand.
St Ouen’s Reserves were held to a 1-1 draw by Grouville Reserves. Calvin Antunes gave Grouville an early lead after three minutes before Simao Oliveira levelled.
In the P.W. Touzel Memorial Trophy semi-final, St Clement Reserves defeated St Brelade Reserves 4-1.
Matt Rawlings scored his second hat-trick of the week – following his Jayson Lee Cup final heroics – while Darren Coyle added the fourth. Kevan Nelson replied for St Brelade. St Clement will meet Jersey Wanderers Reserves in the final.
Finally, in Championship 2, St Paul’s Reserves strengthened their position at the top with a 5-2 victory over First Tower United, led by an Ethan Hutcheson hat-trick. Christopher Conning and Barry Beatson added the other goals.
St Ouen’s C also secured a 4-2 win against Grouville C, with Jack Bara scoring twice and Shane Carre and Leandro Da Silva striking in the final 15 minutes to seal the result.
