Rowathon at the Radisson Hotel raising money for MacMillan Picture: DAVID FERGUSON

ISLANDERS are being called on to dig deep and “pull together” this weekend as the Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey Rowathon 2026 returns.

The fundraiser, supported by Standard Bank Offshore, will take place tomorrow at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, bringing together businesses, community groups and organisations in support of Islanders affected by cancer.

Teams of six will go head-to-head on indoor rowing machines, racing to complete 30,000 metres – the equivalent distance between Jersey and Sark.

While there will be plenty of friendly rivalry and team spirit on display, organisers say the real focus is on raising vital funds to support local cancer services.

Kevin Alway, senior operations lead for Macmillan Jersey, said there had been a “fantastic response” to this year’s event, with all available spaces snapped up ahead of Saturday.

“We’re delighted that the session is now completely full,” he said.

“The appetite to get involved has been brilliant, and that continued support means a great deal to us.”

Mr Alway encouraged anyone who missed out this year to look out for the 2027 sign-ups later this year, adding that the continued appetite to get involved “means a great deal to us”.

Each team is asked to raise £500 in sponsorship in addition to a £500 entry fee.

Mr Alway said the charity “fully expects to surpass last year’s total”, adding that fundraising had “never been more important” than it is now.

He said: “Demand for our services continues to grow, and every pound raised through events such as the Rowathon has a real and direct impact on the lives of Islanders affected by cancer.

“The funds raised don’t disappear into a pot – they enable us to provide practical advice for people affected by cancer, emotional support when the weight of a diagnosis feels too heavy, and wellbeing services that help people feel like themselves again during the toughest times.

“When teams take part in the Rowathon, they’re not just rowing metres – they’re helping ensure that no one in Jersey has to face cancer alone.”

Charles Molteno, chief executive and Island head at Standard Bank Offshore, said: “The Rowathon is a unique event that brings people together in the spirit of teamwork and determination, values that resonate strongly with us as a business.

“We look forward to supporting this much-loved community event over the next three years and helping it grow even further.”
