REMOTE voting in parish assemblies debates should be introduced but the required security measures required at not yet available, the chair of the Constable’s Committee has said.
St Brelade Constable Mike Jackson yesterday told the Parishes and Government Review panel that “we’d all like” to see remote voting made available but its introduction would have to be led by technology.
He made the comments after panel chair, Deputy Helen Miles, asked if there were areas in which the Comité “could develop or enhance its role”.
Mr Jackson replied: “We’re always open to suggestions and maybe that could be led by technology as time goes on.”
He noted discussions he recently had with a journalist, who asked about developing easier ways for parishioners to vote at parish assemblies.
Mr Jackson said: “We would need to follow the technological lead from government.
“It’s fair to say the Greffe is seeking a solution to that in some shape or form. So I think we have to be patient.”
He added: “Yes, we’d all like for people to be able to vote at parish assemblies remotely, but in terms of security we haven’t arrived at that yet.
“I’m sure we will before too long.”
