OVER 80 households who were under-occupying social housing properties have downsized as a result of the government’s right‑sizing policy, according to the Housing Minister.
Deputy Sam Mézec also told the States Assembly yesterday that 36 right-sizing appropriate homes have been approved through the planning process, with a further 14 pending.
“That’s 50 in total, and I’ve no doubt that some of that has come about as a result of the heightened focus there’s been on the subject because of that policy,” he explained.
“I can confirm that Andium Jersey Homes Trust and Les Vaux Housing Trust have developed their right-sizing policies – which I’ve supported them with – and since the policy was introduced, 81 households who were under occupying social housing properties have now downsized.”
The government’s Right-Sizing Policy, initiated in 2024 as part of the “Creating Better Homes” plan, aims to help homeowners move to smaller, more suitable homes, freeing up larger, under-occupied, properties for families.
It focuses on enabling voluntary moves for older residents, addressing financial barriers, and supporting the development of suitable, smaller homes.
