FAMILIES struggling to pay childcare fees upfront will be able to access new financial support thanks to a new charity funding programme.
The Jersey Child Care Trust has launched its Every Step funding programme to help parents make full use of the government’s new funded childcare entitlement for two- to three-year-olds, which came into force last month.
Under the government scheme, parents of all children aged two to three are entitled to claim up to £6,270 per school year towards childcare costs – the equivalent of around 15 hours of term-time care per week.
However, JCCT said some families have found the requirement to pay fees upfront, before being reimbursed, has created a significant barrier.
The charity’s new funding programme is designed to address that issue by allowing JCCT to make upfront payments directly to childcare providers on behalf of families who are unable to cover the initial costs themselves.
Parents can apply directly for the upfront payment option through an online form, with applications assessed within four weeks. The charity said this would allow children to take up their funded hours immediately, without parents having to find the money in advance.
In addition to upfront payments linked to the government’s 15-hour offer, the programme includes further support for families experiencing financial hardship.
These options, which require a referral from a professional such as a health visitor, teacher or social worker, include funded childcare from a child’s second birthday, support during school holidays for pre-school and primary-aged children, and up to 30 hours per week of holiday childcare for older children.
JCCT chief executive Fiona Vacher said the scheme was designed to ensure no family missed out on childcare support because of financial pressures.
“Every child deserves the very best start in life,” she said.
“The Every Step Funding Programme is designed to support families when they need it most and to ensure no one misses out on the new childcare entitlement simply because they cannot pay upfront.
“Aligned closely with the government’s offer and built through our extensive partnerships, the programme complements existing support without duplicating any funding. We are here to support parents every step of the way.”
JCCT said it also welcomed contact from parents and professionals who would like help understanding the new scheme, including invitations to speak at parent and toddler groups. Islanders can email sarah@jcct.org.je to arrange a meeting or ask questions.
Further information and application forms are available on the charity’s website.
